Counseling Residency Program

Our program is designed to bridge the gap between academic preparation and full licensure as a professional counselor. 

This residency offers an immersive experience in a supportive and challenging environment, enabling residents to refine their counseling skills, deepen their understanding of ethical practice, and expand their ability to work with diverse populations.

 

Program Goals

  • Foster professional growth and confidence in emerging counselors.
  • Ensure comprehensive understanding and application of counseling theories and interventions.
  • Promote ethical decision-making and adherence to state and national counseling standards.
  • Encourage the development of specialization areas through diverse training opportunities.

 

Structure and Duration

The residency spans a period of two years, during which residents are expected to complete 4,000 hours of post-graduate supervised experience, with at least 2,000 hours in direct client contact. 

Our program offers a balanced mix of individual and group counseling, assessments, and other professional activities under the supervision of licensed professional counselors.

 

Supervision

Residents will receive at least 100 hours of supervision, with a minimum of one hour of direct supervision each week. Supervision is conducted by experienced, Licensed Professional Counselors committed to mentoring residents through reflective practice, case discussions, and feedback on counseling techniques and client management.

Training Opportunities

  • Our residency program provides extensive training opportunities, including:
  • Workshops and seminars on advanced counseling techniques and specialized topics (e.g., trauma-informed care, multicultural counseling).
  • Regular case conferences and peer consultation groups.
  • Opportunities to engage in research and program evaluation projects.

 

Licensing Preparation

The program is structured to fulfill all requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia, including preparation for the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE) . As well as guidance and support for the licensure application process are provided.

 

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must have completed a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or a related field from a CACREP accredited institution, including a supervised internship. 
  • Preference is given to candidates with a strong academic record, commitment to professional development, and a desire to serve diverse client populations.
