Clinical Internship

Our Clinical Counseling Internship Program is aligned with CACREP standards, and is designed to immerse interns in a robust clinical experience that prepares them for effective professional practice. Through direct client engagement and a variety of clinical activities, our program cultivates the skills, knowledge, and ethical understanding necessary for success in the counseling field.

 

Structure

  • Duration & Hours: The program spans a semester, requiring a minimum of 600 hours, with at least 240 hours dedicated to direct client contact.
  • Diverse Clients: Interns will service a broad client base to including those of different ages, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions, abilities, and socio-economic statuses. 

 

Clinical Experience Examples

  • Direct Client Counseling: Providing individual and group therapy sessions under supervision to develop therapeutic skills.
  • Assessment and Treatment Planning: Conducting client assessments to inform evidence-based treatment plans, learning to use various assessment tools and techniques.
  • Crisis Intervention: Engaging in crisis intervention strategies under supervision, preparing interns to handle acute client issues effectively.
  • Case Management: Gaining experience in case management, including coordinating with other professionals and agencies to support client needs.
  • Professional Development Workshops: Participating in workshops on current counseling practices, ethical considerations, and new counseling technologies or methodologies.

 

Supervision

  • Weekly individual or triadic supervision by qualified professionals, focusing on case consultation and personal development.
  • Group supervision sessions led by clinical staff, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

 

Evaluation

  • Mid-term and final evaluations based on CACREP competencies, such as counseling and interpersonal skills, professional disposition, and adherence to ethical guidelines.
  • Continuous feedback aimed at guiding intern development and ensuring preparedness for professional practice.

 

Intern Development Opportunities

  • Engagement in research projects relevant to clinical counseling, enhancing understanding of evidence-based practices.
  • Encouragement to attend and present at counseling conferences, expanding professional networks and knowledge.
  • Participation in advocacy and outreach programs, promoting social justice and community well-being.

 

Admission Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a CACREP-accredited program.
  • Successful completion of foundational coursework.
  • Application submission, including academic records, recommendation letters, and a personal statement.
