Residency Program

Our program is designed to bridge the gap between academic preparation and full licensure as a professional counselor. This residency offers an immersive experience in a supportive and challenging environment, enabling residents to refine their counseling skills, deepen their understanding of ethical practice, and expand their ability to work with diverse populations.

Who Should Apply?

The CVMHS Clinical Residency Program is intended for counselors who have completed their graduate education and already hold an active Virginia Resident in Counseling license.

Applicants must:

  • Hold an active Virginia Resident in Counseling license before applying
  • Be eligible to provide counseling services through CVMHS
  • Be seeking an employment based clinical residency experience
  • Be willing to provide approved counseling services through CVMHS
  • Maintain their Virginia Resident in Counseling license and remain in good standing throughout employment
  • Have a flexible schedule that includes daytime availability
  • Be able to work in blocks of at least four consecutive hours
  • Meet applicable CVMHS employment, credentialing, documentation, ethical, and clinical practice requirements

Important: Applicants must already hold an active Virginia Resident in Counseling license before applying. Coastal Virginia Mental Health Services does not sponsor initial Resident in Counseling license applications.

An Employment Based Clinical Residency

The CVMHS Clinical Residency Program is an employment based clinical training opportunity. Residents are employed by Coastal Virginia Mental Health Services and provide approved counseling services through the practice.

This program is not designed for individuals seeking supervision independently from employment with CVMHS. Supervision is integrated into the resident’s clinical work and professional development as a CVMHS clinician.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of CVMHS’s selection, credentialing, onboarding, and other applicable employment requirements.

Clinical Supervision

Dr. Sophia Sills Tailor provides supervision for clinical services residents perform through Coastal Virginia Mental Health Services.
Residents may also work at another practice or residency worksite and have a different Virginia Board approved supervisor responsible for the clinical services performed at that location.

Supervision provided through CVMHS applies only to clinical services performed through CVMHS. CVMHS and Dr. Sills Tailor do not supervise or verify residency hours earned through another practice or worksite.

When appropriate and with necessary authorization, Dr. Sills Tailor may communicate with the resident’s other supervisor regarding the resident’s professional development, supervision arrangements, or appropriate coordination of the resident’s residency experience.

Schedule and Availability Expectations

Clinical residency requires consistent availability for client care and other professional responsibilities. Residents must maintain a flexible schedule that includes daytime availability and must be able to commit to clinical scheduling in blocks of at least four consecutive hours.

Applicants whose availability is limited exclusively to evenings or short periods between other obligations may not be able to meet the scheduling expectations of the program.

Specific schedules are established based on practice needs, client demand, resident availability, and the requirements of the position.

Supervision and Employment Documentation

Submission of an application does not establish an employment or supervisory relationship with CVMHS or Dr. Sills Tailor.

Applicants must first complete the CVMHS application, eligibility review, and interview process. Supervisory agreements, employment related supervision documentation, and other applicable residency paperwork will be completed only after an applicant has been selected and has accepted a conditional employment offer from CVMHS.

Applicants should not identify CVMHS or Dr. Sills Tailor as their employer, worksite, or supervisor on new residency documentation unless instructed to do so by CVMHS following selection and acceptance of a conditional employment offer.

Beyond supervision, you will have access to:
Before applying:
Please confirm that you currently hold an active Virginia Resident in Counseling license and can meet the daytime scheduling requirements of the position.

Progressing Toward LPC Licensure

The Clinical Residency Program provides qualifying residents with supervised clinical experience while they work toward LPC licensure in Virginia.

Licensure requirements are established by the Virginia Board of Counseling and may change. Each resident is responsible for understanding and monitoring the requirements applicable to their individual licensure pathway, maintaining required licensure, and accurately tracking their residency experience.

CVMHS will provide documentation related to qualifying clinical services and supervision completed through CVMHS in accordance with applicable requirements.
